The Venue of the School is the Physics Department of Università degli Studi di Milano, located in Via Celoria, 16 – Milano.
This school is devoted to quantum simulation as a tool for studying real-time many-body dynamics, with a focus on problems that are intrinsically difficult for classical computers. The target audience is Master students, PhD students and early-stage researchers with a background in quantum many-body physics.
A practical component of the school will include reserved access to real quantum hardware. Participants will have the opportunity to run selected quantum simulation protocols on the IBM Quantum Platform* and the Turin Lagrange IQM Spark quantum computer.
(*) This educational initiative was made possible by classroom accounts from IBM Quantum.
Lecturers:
– Mario Motta (IBM Research Yorktown)
– Alessandro Roggero (University of Trento)

Course materials
Lecture slides and hands-on exercise notebooks will be uploaded progressively to the School’s GitHub repository during the School.
Please check the repository regularly for new and updated materials.

Coffee breaks & Lunch
Coffee breaks will be provided by the School organizers and will take place in the atrium of the Physics Department.
Lunch is not organized by the School and is not included in the School organization. Participants who are not familiar with the area around the Department are welcome to ask the organizers for suggestions during the School.
A map on nearby university refectories and meal facilities is also available on the Università degli Studi di Milano website (The map is interactive and can be used to explore the available locations and plan your route): Refectories and meal services
Some suggestions:
- Campus Cafeteria, Physics Department
- Campus Cafeteria, Chemistry Department
- Pizzeria Spontini — pizza, takeaway
- TramEnzino — Italian sandwich bar
- Pizzeria Gennaro Rapido — pricey, but very good
- Pizza A Pezzi — pizza & Italian cousine
- Birrificio Lambrate Golgi — craft beer & food
- Au Vieux Strasbourg — Pub
- Acqua e Sale 2 — fish & seafood restaurant
- Gelateria Gorini — ice cream shop
If you get takeaway food, you can enjoy your lunch in the Botanical Garden of Città Studi, located nearby.
Prerequisites and recommended preliminary preparation
To help participants get the most out of the lectures and hands-on sessions, we have prepared a pre-reading material introducing the main scientific themes of the school; these notes are intended as a first immersion into the topics of the school. Participants are strongly encouraged to consult the pre-reading material before the beginning of the school:
The school assumes familiarity with the basic language of quantum circuits, qubits, gates, measurements, and simple circuit execution. These topics will not be reviewed systematically during the lectures. Participants who do not yet feel comfortable with quantum computing basics, or with using a programming framework such as Qiskit, are strongly encouraged to complete some preliminary self-study before the school.
Suggested resources:
For self-study, we recommend the following on-line courses from the Courses web page on the IBM Quantum Platform:
– Basics of quantum information
– Use a quantum computer today
– Quantum computing in practice
We have also released a set of preparatory notebooks:
– Qiskit basics: circuits and local simulation
– Basic quantum gates and implementation of a quantum circuit to exponentiate Pauli operators
– Circuit identities and adaptation to connectivity constraints using the topology of the quantum hardware
– Measurement of observables from a fixed given state and estimate of statistical errors
Participants are expected to work through the available notebooks and become familiar with the concepts and tools they introduce before the School begins.
